Adult reference category

BMI is one screening measure, not a diagnosis. It does not directly measure body fat or distinguish fat from muscle and bone. Do not interpret current pregnancy weight with these adult categories.

How this is calculated

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². The adult reference band from 18.5 to below 25 is commonly labeled “healthy weight,” but a category alone cannot describe an individual's health. A clinician considers medical history, examination and other information. See the CDC adult BMI guidance.

Pregnancy weight guidance uses BMI from before pregnancy, not an ordinary category applied to current pregnancy weight. Discuss your circumstances with your care team. CDC: Weight Gain During Pregnancy.

Not medical advice. BMI does not determine your health, worth, fertility or the care you deserve. Ask a qualified clinician about weight, nutrition or pregnancy concerns.
